In 1498 Columbus sighted this island and in 1650 the first French
settlers arrived. France and Britain periodically fought over
the island until 1784 when Britain regained full control. On
February 7, 1974, Grenada became fully independent. It is the
smallest independent nation in the Western Hemisphere and the
United States criticized the government for following a pro
Soviet and Cuban policy. On October 14, 1983 a military coup
ousted Prime Minister Maurice Bishop, who was later executed on
October 19th. On October 25, 1983, the United States and a force
of six other Caribbean nations invaded and occupied the country
until June 1985. @
